 Boat Owners Property

overseas property with sailing yachtIn our view the perfect overseas property for boat owners, is one where the apartment or house comes with a berth - simply being yards or minutes from your boat is the ideal solution, maximising the time you are on the water, rather then travelling to and from the marina.

Unfortunately such overseas properties are in very short supply, and in high summer marinas can be extremely noisy, late into the night, as developments tend to include restaurants and bars clustered around the waterfront.

So, you need to choose your property with care, but we have found one or two new marina developments which we feel fit the bill and are adding to the list all the time on the blog, so please check back regularly.

New Marinas - Mediterranean

marina propertis with mooringsIf we start in the Mediterranean and Italy, where else, there are two major new marina developments, the first in Genoa, and the second in Sicily. The marina in Genoa is due for completion in 2007 and will offer berths for yachts up to 70 metres, along with a clubhouse, restaurants, shops bars and three shipyards for docking and repairs. When complete the marina will provide berthing for up to 1000 boats, and included in the development are  a complex of apartments many of which have a private berth adjacent to the property itself. With regular flights to Genoa, which is s short hop from the marina, in a matter of hours you can be out of the UK and having lunch on the boat in Portofino, watching the world, and the rich and famous, go by! Or alternatively anchor up, and have lunch in one of the beautiful restaurants.

The latest addition to the marinas in Spain, is of course that at Valencia, developed by Camper and Nicholson for the America's cup in 2007. With deep water berthing for over 40 super yachts, this will truly be a super yacht port, once the party has moved on.

Port de Tarragona is a new marina on the Iberian peninsula, 50 miles south of Barcelona between the Balearics and the Riviera. Again this is a marina with the super yacht market in mind, with three jetties providing mooring for 90 yachts between 30 and 150 metres.

With cheap flights from many parts of the UK, Gibraltar providesmarina property the ideal point to access the marinas of the Costa del Sol, or alternatively to buy property and a berth in the latest marina development on the Rock, the Ocean Village Marina. As the name suggests this is more than just a marina, and represents the first stage in a major makeover, for what was once a tiny, but slightly shabby outpost. Due for completion in 2007, the marina has been developed with a dramatic complex of shops, apartments, super yacht berths and houses, many with their own berths. Overnight berthing is provided at a reduced rate in order to encourage shopping stopovers. Certainly worth a look if you would like to be close to Spain, yet benefit from cheaper fuel and taxes!

Overseas Marinas - Caribbean And Far East

Top of the list in the sheer number of new marina developments is the Dominican Republic with three in the last few years. In St Lucia, plans have recently been announced to build a 130 million dollar resort with luxury condominiums called The Landings. The site is close to the island causeway which links the main island with Pigeon Island in Rodney Bay, which is another recent development. Rodney Bay has to be one of the prettiest anchorages in the whole of the Caribbean.

Many people are now tipping Grenada as the next Caribbean hot spot, as the island starts to market itself more widely, with the Government now pushing forward plans for new infrastructure to support the planned expansion. The latest  marina is that at Virgin Beach near Prickly Bay.

The Far East is also booming with several new developments, particularly on the island of Phuket. Of all the marina developments these seems to represent the ultimate in luxury, affordability, and proximity to your boat. The designs both interior and exterior are exquisite, and with warm all year round temperatures, this really is paradise for the sailor and holidaymaker alike. Buying and owning property here can be complicated, and is certainly not straightforward, but with developments such as the Royal Phuket Marina, The Phuket Boat Lagoon, and the Yacht Haven, I would be willing to take a chance! In my view the perfect overseas property for boat owners from around the world.
